CHAPTER XI

“I am impressed,” Nessa said as they struck off northbound.

“With?” Jak replied.

“You. It looks like you managed to do what you set out to do.”

“Not yet,” Jak said. “There is still much ground to cover.”

“Fair point, but you’ve got an excellent start. When I last scouted that cave, it was crawling with a Tolvar warparty with a thirst for blood. Now it belongs to you and your tribe. And you started a tribe. And you’re getting filthy with two beautiful women. I knew I smelled female elf on you when we first met and I must say, she is very beautiful.”

“Getting filthy?”

Nessa laughed. “That is what I call it, usually. Is it not accurate?”

“I suppose it is,” he agreed. “What do you think of that?”

“You with the two of them? I think that I’m surprised there aren’t more. Unless I’m wrong and there are more.”

“No,” Jak said, “I’m only ‘getting filthy’ with Rylee and Niri. Though that doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t intend to get filthy with other women.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yes. If the right woman comes along.”

“What makes the right woman?” she asked.

“It is difficult to say. She has to be strong, capable, willing to adapt and learn.”

Nessa laughed. “Are you sure? The women you describe, according to what I have heard many men talk about, would not make for good mates.”

“Why?”

“They tend to think for themselves and are willful and headstrong, and I have come to understand that many men have difficulty with these attributes in a woman,” Nessa replied.

“I don’t,” Jak replied.

“Really? You know, I am strong, capable, and willing to adapt,” she murmured.

“Are you now?” he replied.

“Yes. I am.” She began to say something else, but then stopped and sniffed the air. “Mmm. We are close to finding the trail. I smell the bear.”

Jak adjusted his grip on his spear. “I’m ready.”

“Good. Follow me.”

Everything about Nessa’s demeanor changed. Her stance, her expression, the way she moved. She moved quietly, carefully, creeping forward through the trees. Jak followed, doing the exact same thing. He found himself deeply appreciating her and how much of a warrior she was. All of her movements and the way she stalked spoke of knowledge and experience. As much as he loved Niri and Rylee, neither was a warrior, and though he would help train them to defend themselves and the tribe as much as he could, he knew that neither would likely become a warrior. And he was okay with that, he appreciated them how they were.

But there was certain a part of him that yearned for a woman who was like him: a fighter.

And Nessa was clearly a fighter.

As they moved forward, Jak caught the scent of the bear as well, and blood, too. He could hear movement up ahead, and as they drew closer, he became aware of heavy breathing. And the sounds of eating. Chewing, chomping, the occasional crack of a bone being broken in a powerful maw. Nessa, this time around, wore a large club on one broad hip, and she drew it now.
